The Misericordia University men's basketball team opened the season with an 89-81 loss to Marietta in the opening round of the Ursinus Tip-Off Tournament.
Matt Prociak led four Cougars in double figures with 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Jack Gallagher had 12 points while
Nate Townsend scored 11 and
Arvel Chandler added 10.
Prociak's jumper gave the Cougars a 65-64 lead with 9:16 to play, but Marietta responded with a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 79-67 lead.
Ace Varella made two free throws to get within 83-76 with 2:00 to play, but that's as close as the Cougars got.
After finding themselves in a 21-6 hole less than seven minutes into the game, the Cougars charged back over the last five minutes of the first half.
Down 36-26 with 5:19 to go, Chandler and Prociak hit back-to-back three-pointers to get within 36-32.
Prociak and
Eli Stoute both made a pair of free throws to tie the game, 36-36, with 2:52 left in the first half.
Another three-pointer by Prociak gave MU its first lead, 42-40, with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
Will Anozie made two free throws with no time on the clock to give the Cougars a 42-40 halftime lead.
