MU Hockey Explodes for Seven Goals, Shrum Records Shutout

The Misericordia University hockey team took down Lebanon Valley in convincing fashion, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex. Six different Cougars lit the lamp to sweep the MAC season series with the Dutchmen and Anthony Shrum made 35 saves to record the second shutout in program history.

Corbin Scheibel led the Cougars with two goals and Nicholas Solema and Zach Ross added a goal and an assist.  Jack Tos, Dom Cella Vita and Dom Della Civita all scored goals.

Libetti opened the scoring at 2:16 of the first period to give MU a 1-0 lead. John Barrett assisted on Libetti's first collegiate goal.

Solema doubled Misericordia's lead midway through the first, burying a pass from behind the goal line by William Moran at 10:08.

Less than three minutes later, Shane Ward dished a no-look pass to Tos, who scored on a backhander to increase the Cougars' lead to three. Ward was credited with an assist on the 3-0 goal at 12:58.

While on a second period power play, Schiebel redirected a shot by Ross to beat the goaltender and increase the lead to four. Ross got the helper at 9:42 of the middle frame.

Della Civita got in on the action shortly after Scheibel's goal, taking advantage of a screen in front of the LVC goaltender and scoring from the point. Eric Kotkowski and Solema were credited with assists on the 5-0 goal.

Scheibel potted his second goal of the evening just 1:11 into the third period off a rebound on a shot from Eric Honold, who assisted on the power play marker.

Ross delivered the seventh and final goal of the game at 19:40 to cap off a dominant night by the Cougars.

Shrum turned aside the first shot he faced just 1:27 into the contest.

Misericordia came out with a strong forecheck in LVC's defensive zone in the early stages of the first period. Barrett tied up a Dutchmen defender behind the net and stole the puck before delivering a centering pass to Libetti, who was wide open in the slot. The junior wristed a shot to the upper right corner of the net to put Misericordia on the board at 2:16. Barrett picked up a helper on Libetti's first collegiate goal.

Midway through the first frame, Lebanon Valley's goaltender left his crease to stop a dump-in and misplayed the puck, allowing Moran to dish a pass to Solema who was all alone just outside the blue paint. Solema tapped the puck home to give MU a 2-0 lead at 10:08 with an assist going to Moran.

The Cougars' offense continued to roll in the first period as Ward swooped in to pick up the puck on the end boards. He swiftly backhanded a pass to Tos, who was positioned in front of the net. Tos avoided a falling LVC defender and chipped the puck past the netminder to extend the lead to three at 12:58. Ward was awarded the lone assist on Tos' seventh goal of the season, tying him with James Eng for the team lead.

The Dutchmen attempted to rally towards the end of the period, firing three shots on goal in the final two minutes. Shrum stood tall and kept LVC off the scoresheet as the Cougars closed out the first frame leading 3-0.

Lebanon Valley was awarded their first power play of the game early in the second and got to work on the man advantage. Despite containing the majority of play to their offensive zone, the Dutchmen were unable to find the back of the net due to three more saves by Shrum.

After the Cougars drew a penalty at 9:31, the power play unit wasted no time in getting on the board. MU won the faceoff and worked the puck around the boards to Ross on the blue line. Ross sent a wrist shot towards the net that was deflected past the goalie by Scheibel, giving Misericordia a 4-0 lead. Ross got the assist on the man advantage goal at 9:42.

MU's offense continued to dominate play in the second period, efficiently moving the puck through the LVC zone. With a Cougar screening the goalie's vision, Della Civita picked up a pass from his defensive partner and fired a shot from the point that whistled past the goalie's glove side less than 30 seconds after the 4-0 marker. Kotkowski and Solema assisted on the fifth unanswered goal of the game.

Despite the majority of play being controlled by Misericordia, Shrum remained locked in and stopped three more shots prior to the second period expiring. The Cougars held a comfortable 5-0 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

Misericordia went back to the man advantage just 45 seconds into the third period. Once again, they wasted no time setting up shop inside Lebanon Valley's defensive zone. The puck found Honold's stick, who threaded a shot through traffic. Although the initial shot was saved, the puck trickled away from the goaltender and Scheibel cleaned up the rebound to give MU a 6-0 lead. Honold assisted on Scheibel's second of the game on the power play at 1:11.

The teams continued to battle through the final frame as Jaron Ketterman, Kotkowski, Tos and Trent Barker all recorded blocked shots. Shrum continued his stellar performance in net, making nine saves in the final 20 minutes of action.

With time ticking down, Ross entered the zone with a three-on-two scoring chance and lit the lamp one more time for the Cougars. The unassisted goal came at 19:40 and proved to be the final play of the night as Misericordia finished off their 7-0 win, the most goals in program history.

Libetti went 12-16 at the faceoff dot while Kotkowski blocked two shots.

The Cougars travel to Arcadia to take on the Knights, Friday at 7:30.
