Oliver's Gem Leads MU to Sweep at Arcadia

The Misericordia University baseball team won a pair of games against Arcadia in their MAC Freedom doubleheader at Skip Wilson Field, Saturday afternoon. The two victories gave MU the series win over the Knights.

Jack Regenye and Brian Kanwisher both had one hit as the Cougars took the opener by a score of 1-0. Regenye, Owen Daminger and Joe Peters all recorded a stolen base.

Max Oliver advanced to 2-1 on the season, pitching six scoreless frames in the first game and striking out two batters. Daminger came in from shortstop to pitch and closed the game out to earn his first save of the season.

In the second game of the afternoon, Brian Korchok, Jake McDonough, Drew Van Horn, Daminger and Peters all recorded two RBI.

Kanwisher led the team with four hits, followed by Peters with three. Both players, along with Korchok, hit doubles for MU.

Brock Bollinger scored a team-high four runs, including one he circled the bases following a throwing error on his bunt single.

Bryan Henry earned his third win of the season, striking out two batters and only allowing three runs through 7.0 innings of work.

The lone run of the opening game came in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, a wild pitch allowed Peters to come in from third and put MU on top, 1-0.

Kanwisher got things started in the second game with an RBI single that brought home Regenye from third, opening up a 1-0 Misericordia lead in the first inning.

Two batters later, Peters found a gap in right center for a bases-loaded single that drove in Korchok and Bollinger. MU now led 3-0.

The Cougars tacked on another run when McDonough ripped a single through the left side of the infield, allowing Daminger to cross the plate as the fourth run of the first frame.

After Arcadia responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, the score now stood at 4-2. Korchok stepped up to the plate in the top of the second with the bases loaded and reached on a fielding error. Bollinger and Regenye made their way around the bases and scored to reclaim the Cougars' four-run lead.

Following the costly error, back-to-back batters were hit by pitches, bringing in another run to put Misericordia in the driver's seat, 7-2.

One of the more unusual runs of the season came in the top of the third when a throwing error by the Knights on a Bollinger bunt left the ball sailing towards the right field corner. Bollinger came all the way around to score, giving MU an 8-2 lead.

Van Horn expanded the Cougars' lead to 9-2 in the fourth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly that scored Daminger.

Henry pitched three consecutive 1-2-3 frames to keep Arcadia's deficit at seven runs through five innings.

Misericordia tacked on a run in the seventh as Korchok doubled down the left field line to bring home Bollinger from second base.

Back-to-back doubles in the eighth by Korchok and Daminger brought in three more runs to give MU a 12-3 lead. Van Horn drove in another run later in the inning, bringing the score to 13-3.

Two more Cougars crossed the plate on a fielding error by Arcadia as the lead grew to 12 runs.

The Knights put two runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth, but Misericordia answered right back with a bases-loaded single by Rafael Fernandez pushed the score to 16-5.

Wiley Fleck took the mound in the ninth and pitched a scoreless frame as Misericordia took the second game, 16-5.

The Cougars hit the road once again when they take on Swarthmore, Tuesday at 3:30.
