Cougars Sweep Wilkes, Doherty Sets Two Stolen Base Records

The Misericordia University softball team swept a doubleheader from Wilkes, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Cougars took the opener, 8-3, and won the nightcap, 11-2, in five innings.

Kiersten Tinio drove in four runs in the opener and Casey Funesti hit a solo homer.

Bridget Doherty had a stolen base to break the single-season school record with 22 and became MU's all-time leader with 53.

Sienna Lawson picked up the win with three innings of relief work.

Funesti and Kaitlyn Slusser both drove in three runs for Misericordia in the nightcap.

Morgan Kelly allowed just three hits over four innings to earn the win.

In game one, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded HBP by Emily Susanj.

Wilkes took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but the Cougars went in front for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Funesti led off the frame with a solo homer and Tinio's two-out single gave MU a 4-2 lead.

Wilkes got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Cougars put the game away with four two-out runs in the sixth.

Doherty doubled to put runners at second and third and Tinio lined a single just inside the left field line to make it 6-3.

Gianna Russo and Gianna Foreman both singled to drive in runs to provide the final margin.

The Cougars got all the runs they would need in the first two innings of the nightcap.

Mackenzie Fizer singled through the left side to drive in the first run and Funesti made it 3-0 with a two-run single to right.

The Cougars took control of the game with eight runs in the bottom of the second.

Russo singled in two runs and Slusser capped the rally with a bases-loaded double to left center.
