The Misericordia University softball team split a doubleheader at FDU-Florham, Tuesday.

After dropping the opener, 2-0, the Cougars took the nightcap, 8-4.

Emily Susanj and Kaitlyn Slusser had the only hits for MU in the opener.

FDU-Florham scored the only runs of the game on a two-run double in the bottom of the third.

Casey Funesti had four hits and drove in three runs to lead the Cougars in game two.

Gianna Russo drove in two runs and Susanj had two more hits.

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.

After a pair of walks, Mackenzie Fizer reached on a bunt single to load the bases.  Russo drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Funesti singled through the right side on a 1-2 pitch to drive in two runs.

MU made it 6-2 with three more runs in the fifth.

Bridget Doherty led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.  Fizer walked and stole second.  Fizer walked and stole second and Russo lined a single to left to bring home a run.  Funesti followed with an RBI-double down the right field line and Russo came home on the throw to the infield to give MU a 6-2 lead.

The Cougars added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings on sacrifice flies by Doherty and Gianna Foreman.

Morgan Kelly picked up the win with three innings of relief.
