Cougars Use Strong Third Period to Win on Senior Appreciation Day

The Misericordia University field hockey team used a strong third period to come away with a 3-2 win over Kean on Senior Appreciation Day, Saturday.

Ashley Pitz, Abigail O'Donnell, Emily Ervin, Sydney Taylor, Julia Warren, Madi Rowe and Sarah Bogina were honored for their contributions to the program before the start of the game.

Madison Lasinski led the Cougars with two goals and Ervin tacked on the other. Ava Cirigliano and Madison Blauch each had an assist.

After a scoreless first period that included three MU shots getting saved, Kean got on the board with a goal at 16:00. Misericordia attempted to answer off two penalty corners at 22:07 and 23:04, but was unable to capitalize on their opportunities.

As time wound in the first half, the Cougars were fouled in the circle and were awarded a penalty stroke. Lasinski stepped up and zipped the ball to the top left corner of the net to tie up the score going into half.

MU used the momentum they gained from the end of the second period to score two goals within a span of 1:17 in the third, both of which came off penalty corners. At the 36:18 mark, Ervin took a pass from Blauch and chipped it over the defense to make it 2-1. Just a minute later at 37:43, Lasinski received a pass to the middle from Cirigliano and sent her shot to the low right corner to improve the advantage to 3-1.

Kean responded with a goal at 40:58 to cut its deficit to 3-2, but were only able to get three more shots off the rest of the game, all of which were blocked. The Cougars' defense held firm to seal the victory.

MU's offense finished with 14 shots, including a 7-2 difference in the fourth period.

Misericordia's next match will be at home against Oneonta on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7:00.
