Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hoffman Scores Game-Winning Goal in MU’s Double Overtime Win over Oneonta

Celeste Hoffman scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Abigail O'Donnell at the 74:01 mark to give the Misericordia University field hockey team a 1-0 double overtime win over SUNY Oneonta, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

After a scoreless 73 minutes, O'Donnell stole a Oneonta pass going upfield and took it down to the edge of the circle. She sent a pass over the middle to Hoffman, who made a move around the goalie and fired a back-handed shot to the middle of the goal to secure the victory.

The Cougars have won five of their last six games, including a three-game home winning streak.

The teams played to a 0-0 stalemate throughout regulation. The second quarter saw MU generate four shots, including two Madison Lasinski shots at 19:33 and 23:04, but to no avail, going into halftime. Misericordia kept up the shots in the second half with an overall 12-3 margin. Over the course of the last 10 minutes of regulation, the team accumulated five shots, but was unable to notch a goal. O'Donnell's shot at the 58:34 mark was saved by the Red Dragons' goalie to force overtime.

The Cougars continued their aggressive offensive attack with five shots in the first 7:04 of the first overtime period, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The defense made two key stops during a Oneonta penalty corner at 68:50, blocking one shot and Sarah Bogina dove to her right for another shot from the left to keep the game alive heading into double overtime.

MU outshot Oneonta, 4-0, in the second overtime before finally cashing in with the game-winning goal.

Misericordia dominated the Red Dragons in shots (27-7) and penalty corners (14-2). Bogina notched four saves as a part of the team's stifling defensive effort.

The Cougars will remain at home to face McDaniel, Friday at 6:00. The game will be dedicated to Morgan's Message, an organization focused on raising awareness around mental health in athletics.
