The Misericordia University field hockey team extended its winning streak to three after defeating McDaniel, 2-0, Friday night at Mangelsdorf Field in the Morgan's Message game.
Â
Tonight's contest was dedicated to Morgan's Message, an organization focused on raising awareness around mental health in athletics.
Â
Ava Cirigliano and
Madison Lasinski were responsible for the goals to guide the Cougars to their sixth win in their last seven games.
Abigail O'Donnell added an assist on Cirigliano's shot.
Â
The teams engaged in a scoreless battle in the first half, with just a combined six shots through the first 30 minutes. The best scoring opportunity came from McDaniel at the 16:00 mark, but
Sarah Bogina put a stop to a shot going towards the lower right side of the goal to preserve a 0-0 score going into halftime.
Â
It was all MU in the third period, as Cirigliano took a pass from O'Donnell and rocketed the shot to the bottom left corner to give the team a 1-0 lead. Just a little under two minutes later at the 39:17 mark, after a McDaniel foul in the striking circle, Lasinski fired a shot to the left side of the net to extend the advantage to 2-0. The Cougars outshot the Green Terror by a 6-0 margin.
Â
McDaniel attempted a comeback with three shots in the first five minutes in the final period, but were turned away by the Cougars' defense blocking two shots and Bogina denying another shot going to the top left corner with her hand at 54:16. MU blocked one more shot at 56:15 to secure the victory.
Â
Misericordia recorded its second-straight shutout by only allowing six shots through the entire game. Through their last two contests, they've only allowed 13 shots.
Â
Lasinski scored her fourth goal of the season while Cirigliano tacked on her third.
Â
The Cougars will face Moravian at Mangelsdorf Field, next Wednesday at 7:00.
