Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

MU Women Fall to Rochester in Battle of Nationally-Ranked Squads

The number seven nationally ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team fell to 15th-ranked Rochester in a close 1-0 defeat, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

The Yellow Jackets scored the game-deciding goal at the 83:07 mark.

MU generated 13 shots, including a team-high four from Esabella Mendola, but was unable to capitalize.

Olivia Maniskas had a beautiful first shot of the game for either team at the 2:13 mark, as her shot from a little outside of the box floated to the top middle. However, Rochester's goalie made a diving save and the ball hit off the top of the crossbar.

The Cougars got five more shots after Maniskas' boot, but were held out of goal. Lauren Mondor saved three of the Yellow Jackets' nine first-half shots to keep the score at 0-0 at halftime.

Misericordia opened the second half with an aggressive offensive attack, accumulating five scoring opportunities within the first 20 minutes. The two best chances came from Lily Heistand at 55:29 and E. Mendola at 61:00, but both had their low left shots saved.

Maniskas had another opportunity to put MU ahead at 71:13 with a shot off a volley on the outside of the 6-yard box, but the ball rolled right to the goalie for the save.

Mondor made five saves in the second half, including two magnificent stops, to keep the Yellow Jackets out of goal. At the 77:16 mark, the senior goalie dove to her right to cause a shot going lower right to sail wide of the post. On the ensuing corner, she proceeded to swat away a header over the net.

Mondor had one more save at 81:53, but couldn't overcome the follow-up game-winner from Rochester. She finished the game with eight total saves in a valiant effort.

Misericordia will travel to face Eastern University, Tuesday at 3:30.
