The Misericordia University women's basketball team earned a 72–51 victory over King's, Wednesday evening on Doc Mould Court.
Lizzy Mitchell had a team-high 13 points to lead six Cougars in double figures while
Emily Romanowski recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Morgan Janeski,
Chase Purdy and
Ava Cirigliano each added 12 points and
Caitlin Landgraf chipped in 11.
Marisa Captoni anchored the defense with five steals.
Trailing 2–0 early, Mitchell drove into the paint and dished to Landgraf, who knocked down a baseline jumper to open the scoring for the Cougars. After forcing a turnover, Mitchell followed with a tough finish at the rim to give Misericordia the lead.
Following a quick three-pointer by King's, Romanowski converted a layup to regain the lead and put the Cougars in front for good.
The buckets sparked a 17–7 run over the next five minutes, including Cirigliano's friendly bounce on a reverse layup to end the first quarter with Misericordia up 23–15.
After nearly three minutes without a Cougar basket in the second quarter, Cirigliano knocked down a jumper in the lane to start an 11–0 run that lasted until the midway point of the quarter.
Just before halftime, Captoni came up with a steal and dished to Janeski, who hit a pull-up jumper from the right elbow with two seconds remaining, giving the Cougars a 16-point lead at the break, 40-24.
Misericordia maintained its momentum in the third quarter as Mitchell hit a step-back jumper from the foul line, followed by an off-balance baseline finish from Landgraf to extend the lead to 44-24.
After a brief 8–0 run by King's, the Cougars responded with a 19–8 run of their own to close the quarter with a 62-38 advantage.
In the fourth quarter,
Chase Purdy scored six of the Cougars' 10 points as Misericordia secured the 72–51 victory.
