The Misericordia University softball team swept a doubleheader at Stevens, Sunday. MU won the opener, 9-1, in five innings and rallied to win the nightcap, 5-3, in 10 innings.
Gabby Cruz scattered six hits to win the opener while
Bridget Doherty,
Gianna Russo,
Mackenzie Fizer,
Kiersten Tinio and
Rylie Nasso all had two hits.
Gianna Foreman and
Alicia Moran both drove in two runs.
Juleigh Bowmaster worked seven innings in relief to earn the win in game two.
Doherty and Nasso had two hits and
Casey Funesti drove in two runs.
The Cougars scored twice in the second and third innings in game one before breaking the game open with five runs in the fifth.
Leading 4-1, the Cougars connected for five straight singles to start the fifth. Russo and Fizer on infield singles and Foreman drove in two runs with a single to right center.
Tinio reached on a bunt single and
Emmalee Mowery made it 7-1 with an RBI-ground out.
Nasso singled up the middle to drive in a run and Moran put MU up 9-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Funesti had a two-run double to give the Cougars a 2-0 in the top of the third inning of game two.
Stevens scored once in the fourth to get within a run and took the lead with two runs in the fifth.
Kaliana Auchey led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single and pinch-runner
Stephanie Barone went to third on Doherty's bunt single and a throwing error.
Fizer drove in the tying run with ground out to force extra innings.
Tinio and Moran hit back-to-back RBI-doubles in the top of the 10
th to provide the winning margin and Bowmaster retired the Ducks in order in the bottom of the inning.
