Joe Portland is in his second year as the graduate assistant with the Misericordia University volleyball teams.
A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Portland comes to Misericordia after spending time at West Chester University and Muhlenberg College.
At West Chester, he was in charge of tracking the serve reception, offensive strategy, setting adjustments and blocking strategy during matches.
As an assistant coach at the college level, he has helped lead Muhlenberg and West Chester to winning seasons, with a combined record at the two schools of 41-20.
Portland also spends time coaching the KRVA Region High Performance program where he is currently the head coach of the youth team heading to Oklahoma to compete in the summer of 2018. He also served as an assistant coach for the youth team that won a silver medal in the Girls Youth Division in 2017.
He also was the head men’s volleyball coach at Exeter Township Senior High in 2013 where he led them to a 12-3 record and a division title.
Portland also played on the West Chester University men’s club team and made the MACVC all-conference team during his playing career. He also served as President and Vice-President of the team.
He also has gained coaching experience, coaching boys and girls club teams and worked at volleyball camps all along the east coast.
