10/10/2009 4:13:49 PM

The Misericordia University field hockey team suffered its second consecutive heartbreaking defeat, 3-2 in a shootout, to FDU-Florham, Saturday at Mangelsdorf Field.

Samantha Sorokas scored twice for the Cougars while Haley Ellis and Amanda Blank added assists.

FDU scored on the first corner of the game to grab a 1-0 lead at 2:46.

The Cougars scored twice in a three-minute span late in the half to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

Ellis took a corner from Blank and passed to Sorokas who ripped a shot just inside the left post to tie the score 1-1 at 31:49.

Sorokas took Blank's corner and blasted a shot in the same spot with just one second remaining before halftime.

Sorokas nearly put the Cougars ahead 3-1 early in the second half, but her shot caromed off the left post.

FDU tied the game with 20 minutes remaining.

Grace Riker made eight saves for the Cougars.

Camilla Hansen got a shot behind the FDU keeper near the end of the first overtime period, but a Devils' defender was able to clear the ball of the line.

Megan Lafaw made a similar play for the Cougars midway through the second OT.

The Cougars, 6-8 (1-2), will travel to Catholic, Monday.
