Scanlon Penalty Clinches Second Place for Men's Soccer

10/31/2009 9:43:40 PM

An overtime penalty kick by junior Joey Scanlon was enough to give the Misericordia men's soccer team second place in the Freedom Conference by beating King's 2-1, Saturday in Wilkes-Barre.

MU (10-4-3, 5-1-1) will now host local rival Wilkes on Wednesday in a Freedom semifinal match. King's will travel to Manhattanville in the other semifinal.

Scanlon converted the penalty early in the second overtime period after Andy Bush was pushed over in the box.

Misericordia initially took the lead in the 19th minute on their first clear chance as Kevan Nagle's shot from outside the box skipped over the King's keeper and into the Monarch goal. The Cougars had only mustered one shot at this point in the match, but they were ahead.

King's had nearly gone ahead six minutes earlier, as Alex Martino got free on the right side and ripped a shot off the left post. MU goalkeeper Andrew Loyd appeared to get a finger tip on the shot which was just enough to keep it out.

King's hit the woodwork again four minutes later, this time on a long ball into the box. Billy Elliot beat Loyd to the cross and headed it past the Cougar keeper but his chance again rattled the post.

With 23 minutes to play, King's came close again. Elliot had his second meeting with the MU goal frame as his header clattered off the crossbar and over.

Chris Hummel nearly sealed the game with 11 minutes remaining, forcing O'Shura into a difficult save on his 40-yard rocket shot.

King's finally broke through in the 82nd minute, as Dan Horn's arching header sailed over Loyd and just snuck under the crossbar, tying the game at 1-1.

Nagle could have won the game in the first overtime, as he made a twisting run through the King's defense before his shot was saved by O'Shura from close range.
