The Misericordia women's soccer team clinched the second seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs with a 5-2 victory at King's on Saturday night, although the Monarchs made it interesting for a while with an early second-half rally.
MU will now host Eastern on Tuesday in the Freedom semifinals. Manhattanville will host Wilkes in the other game.
Four different players-
Laura Roney,
Kim Suchoski,
Sam Helmstetter and
Andrea Sierer- scored for the Cougars in a game that equaled Misericordia's highest offensive output of the season.
A great individual effort from Roney gave the Cougars an early lead less than 10 minutes into the game. The freshman struck a shot from over 30 yards out that found the upper left corner of the Monarch goal.
After another 10 minutes it was 2-0, this time with Roney sending in a cross that was knocked in by Suchoski for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Suchoski then assisted Helmstetter on another cross to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Just before halftime, senior
Ashley McDonnell played a nice through ball to Sierer. With the King's goalie off her line, Sierer lofted a shot over her and just under the crossbar, giving MU a 4-0 lead at the break.
King's looked capable of fighting back early in the second period, as two quick goals cut the Misericordia lead in half with 32 minutes still to play.
MU kept attacking though, and put the game away just minutes after the second King's goal.
Lauren Payne shot to the far post with Suchoski trailing down the left side. A King's defender trying to cut off the ball managed to knock it past her keeper into the Monarch net. The score was credited as an own goal.
The Cougars (8-11 overall) had further chances in the half but settled for a 5-2 win. MU held an 18-6 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper
Morgan Myers made four saves in the victory.
