The Misericordia University softball team swept Alvernia in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader this weekend at home. The Cougars wrapped it up with 3-0 and 3-2 wins to improve to 10-8 (4-2 Freedom).
It was a banner day for Kat Lucenti, who pitched a shutout in game one and 2.2 innings of relief in game two. The Crusaders turned the pressure up on Lucenti when she came to plate in extra innings of game two, but she belted the game winner into left field for her second win of the day.
The Cougars nailed down game one early. Gina Urbon and Jill Castaldi knocked back-to-back singles to start the third. Urbon would eventually score on a sac fly by Courtney Novajosky. Castaldi later stole home to put the Cougars up 2-0.
The final run came on an RBI single to right in the sixth by Nicole Wenner. Novajosky scored the run and put the Cougars on top 3-0.
The Cougars again struck first in game two. Urbon homered to center in the fifth to make it 1-0. Starting pitcher Katie Eiden doubled to right two batters later and went on to score on an RBI single by Holly Sarnak.
But the Crusaders scored runs in the sixth and seventh to knot the game at 2-2.
Nicole Hoskins and Maria Kidron were both plunked by pitches to start the bottom of the eighth. Two batters later, pinch hitter Kristi McCluskey singled to load the bases, and left the bases loaded for Lucenti.
Lucenti worked the count full before swatting the game-winning single to left and sealing her second win.
