An impressive first-half effort by the Misericordia men's soccer team was undone as Dickinson exploited the Cougars for three late goals in a night game at Manglesdorf Field.
Dickinson threatened early, hitting both the crossbar and post in the first ten minutes. But MU slowly took control of the game, keeping possession and threatening on several corner kicks and throw-ins.
The Cougars' quality play was finally rewarded a half-hour in, when a
Chris Hummel throw-in was deflected by
Jay-P Evans into the path of
Andy Bush. The freshman striker left no question as he powered the shot into the upper netting, to the delight of a large Misericordia crowd.
MU took the 1-0 lead into halftime and nearly doubled it early in the second half, as captain
Alec Parker headed a
Nick Ferguson cross just over the bar, with the Dickinson goalkeeper stranded.
But Dickinson began to find holes in the MU defense and leveled the game with 28 minutes to play. MU goalkeeper
Andrew Loyd then made a great diving save to his left, but the Cougars were on their back foot by this point.
Dickinson took the lead in the 78th minute, and the Cougars looked inspired in their attempt for a comeback, almost breaking through when the Dickinson keeper came out of his box to deny Bush a second goal. But with six minutes to play, Dickinson grabbed a third to hand Misericordia a 3-1 loss, identical to the scoreline when these two teams met in 2008.
Next up for the Cougars is an away match-up with Ursinus, this Saturday at 3:30 PM.
