9/12/2009 6:11:05 PM

Sophomore Haley Ellis capped off an exciting overtime period with the game-winning goal as the Misericordia field hockey team defeated Elmira 2-1 at Mangelsdorf Field.

Ellis' goal came with under five minutes to play in overtime, after the Cougars (2-2) had several golden opportunities to win earlier in the period.

Just a minute into overtime, Amanda Blank's shot went just wide with Elmira's goalie out of the play. Two minutes before her goal, Ellis had been saved on a 2-on-1 breakaway.

The Cougars out-shot Elmira 31-7, and also held a 16-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Soaring Eagles did not record a shot in overtime.

An uneventful first half featured only a handful a chances for each team. Eight minutes in, MU's Chelsea Lamoreaux shot just wide off of a penalty corner. Elmira's best chance of the half came with 10 minutes to play, when MU goalie Denise Thiel made a great close range shot to keep the game scoreless.

The action picked up in the second half, with an Elmira defender making an outstanding diving save on the goal line four minutes in after MU's Samantha Sorokas has beaten the goalkeeper.

Seconds later, Misericordia led 1-0 as Sorokas' next shot found the goal. Elmira answered almost immediately however, and the game remained tied at 1-1 until Ellis' winner.

The Cougars had several chances to win in regulation, as the Elmira goalie stopped Camilla Hansen on a breakaway with ten minutes to play and also came well out of her goal to stop Ellis with five minutes left.

An Elmira yellow card gave the Cougars an extra player for the final three minutes of regulation, but they were unable to convert despite a nice shot by Ellis being saved just before time expired.

Grace Riker was the winning goalie in relief of Thiel. Next up, the Cougars face Alvernia on Tuesday.
