Scranton scored four second-half goals to defeat the Misericordia women's soccer team 5-0 today at Mangelsdorf Field.
In an even first half, each team recorded four shots. Freshman
Laura Roney had MU's best chance of the half, when her curling shot to the upper corner was saved by Scranton goalkeeper
Caitlin Byrne.
28 minutes in, the Royals had the lead on a somewhat fluky goal. Freshman
Sydney Parker lofted a 25-yard shot that dipped over goalkeeper
Morgan Myers' head and into the far left corner, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
Scranton almost scored in similar fashion less than seven minutes later. Freshman
Amanda Kresge came on as a substitute and 30 seconds later hit a looping shot that went just over the crossbar.
Scranton took a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the second half, on a second goal by Parker. MU kept pushing forward though, and right off the kick-off they had a corner off another Byrne save on Roney. Minutes later, a second Cougar corner was headed just high and wide, again by Roney.
The floodgates soon opened however, as Scranton ran away with three more goals in a ten-and-a-half minute span minute through the second half.
Eileen Sodano,
Caila Zappala and
Alana Bencivengo were the Royal goal-scorers.
Scranton out-shot MU 13-9, with the Cougars holding a slim 6-5 advantage in corners. Next up, Misercordia (2-5) hosts Marywood on Tuesday.
