The Misericordia University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Wednesday evening at the University of Scranton.
The Cougars, now 2-3-2, got on the scoreboard first, as junior midfielder
Joey Scanlon headed in a ball served up from the right sideline by
Bryan Kulbacki in the 14th-minute.
MU nearly doubled their lead later in the half, when
Cody Harman headed
Matt Scott through and the Scranton goalkeeper made one of several outstanding stops to deny the sophomore winger. On the ensuing corner, Scanlon bounced his header just over the bar.
The Royals tied the game in the 34th minute, after a Scranton striker managed to stay onside and collected the ball right in front of goal before easily slotting home.
Scranton had one more clear-cut opportunity in the second half, when a Royals winger dribbled Misericordia keeper
Andrew Loyd but somehow shot wide with an open net in front of him.
From then on, MU had the better of the chances.
The Scranton goalkeeper made a fantastic save on
Nick Ferguson with 12 minutes left in regulation, and Scanlon's header on the corner kick was cleared off the line.
Senior
Josh Yoo had the best chance of the first overtime period, when he headed past the keeper and was then collided with the Scranton goalie who tried to beat him to the ball. No call was made on the play. Freshman
Kevan Nagle appeared to be fouled in the box in the second overtime period, but again the Cougars' appeals for a penalty were waived off.
Loyd was forced to make one more save on a Scranton header in the final minutes of overtime. The senior was credited with seven saves in goal.
Misericordia now leads the all-time series with Scranton, 8-3-1. The Cougars will host John Carroll, Saturday at 1:00.
