The Misericordia University women's soccer team was held scoreless in a frustrating loss as the Cougars fell 1-0 to Manhattanville, Saturday in Purchase, NY.
Misericordia had appeared to be the more threatening team early but it was Manhattanville who took the lead in the 34th minute. The Valiants played a ball over the top and forward
Holly Nonis beat
Morgan Myers to it, flipping it over the Cougar goalkeeper and into the net.
Manhattanville thought they had a chance to double their advantage in the second half when the official whistled for a penalty kick but the offsides flag was already up, nullifying the decision.
Misericordia had had the first good chance of the game 16 minutes in.
Laura Roney played a through ball to
Kim Suchoski, who made a nice touch inside to seal off her defender but shot right at the Valiant goalkeeper.
Midway through the half, freshman
Christine Wilhelm had a one-on-one opportunity and carried all the way from midfield, only to be nudged off the ball by the final defender.
MU kept pressing after going behind and had a trio of good chances in the final five minutes of the half. First
Andrea Sierer played a great weighted through ball to
Sam Helmstetter, whose shot forced a diving save from the Valiants goalkeeper. The rebound came right out to Sierer but the junior shot over.
Suchoski then had the ball on the left side and played across the box to
Alyssa Mocion, but her shot was held by the Manhattanville keeper. Roney played a nice give-and-go with Suchoski seconds before the break, but shot wide right from the top of the box.
The Valiants started to control possession in the second half, with Myers (six stops) making a good tip save off a header following a Manhattanville corner, and holding a dangerous cross midway through the half.
MU had its best chance to pull level in the 85th minute, when a corner reached Roney at the back post, but she volleyed over the net from close range.
The Cougars fall to 8-4-1, 0-2 with the loss, but both league defeats have come against last season's Freedom Conference finalists. MU has a chance to get back on track Tuesday with a visit from King's.
