The Misericordia University softball team blasted four home runs in the second game to salvage a split of a non-conference doubleheader, Monday evening at the University of Scranton.
After dropping the opener, 8-1, the Cougars took game two, 10-7, in eight innings.
Nicole Hoskins ripped a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning and
Caitlin Cromley, Nicole Wenner and
Hollie Sarnak all added homers.
Sarnak had three hits and
Courtney Novajosky, Cromley, Wenner, Hoskins and
Jillian Castaldi all had two hits.
Kat Lucenti started on the mound and worked the first three innings and re-entered in the seventh inning to earn the win. She moved past
Kristi Devens into third place in all-time wins with 51.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the second when Sarnak reached on a one-out single and came around on
Nicole Boccia's double.
Gina Urbon singled and after a fielder's choice forced Boccia at home, Castaldi's single drove in Urbon to make it 2-0.
MU added two more quick runs in the third when Wenner singled with two outs and Sarnak ripped a two-run homer to center.
Scranton got two runs back in the bottom of the third and the Cougars got them back in the top of the fifth.
Novajosky led off with a single, but was erased on a double play before Cromley and Wenner hit back-to-back solo homers to give the Cougars a 6-2 lead.
TheRoyals scored two in the bottom of the fifth and made it 6-5 with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Cougars added a much-needed insurance run in the seventh when Novajosky led off with a double and scored on Sarnak's single.
The Royals forced extra innings with a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh.
Hoskins put the Cougars ahead 9-7 with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh and Castaldi,
Maria Kidron and Cromley all singled to make it 10-7.
In the opener, Novajosky and Wenner had two hits each for the Cougars. Scranton broke a scoreless tie with a six-run fourth inning, thanks in part to four Cougars' errors.
The Cougars are 12-11 and will host Neumann, Wednesday.
