Nate Newman became Misericordia's all-time home run leader as the Cougars opened a three-game series with 10-5 win at Eastern, Friday.
Newman had two hits, including his 22nd career homer, and drove in three runs.
Bubba Jasinski had two hits, including a solo homer, and
Andrew Tressa added a solo homer.
Anthony Goncalves had two hits and
Nate Hamlin drove in two runs.
Pete Doggett worked six innings to earn the win and
Matt Karabin pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save.
Tressa drew a one-out walk in the top of the first and Newman blasted his 12th homer of the season to the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
MU made it 3-0 in the fourth when
Jamie Philippi reached on an error, stole second and came home on Goncalves' single to left field.
Tressa led off the fifth with a solo homer and Newman singled and scored on Jasinski's infield single to give the Cougars a 5-2 lead in the fifth.
Jasinski belted a two-out solo homer to make it 6-3 in the seventh.
After Eastern scored a pair in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars broke the game open with four runs in the top of the eighth.
Goncalves sandwiched a single between walks to
Jeff Slanovec and
Chris Tuttle to load the bases. Hamlin drove in two runs with a single to right center. After Tuttle scored on an error, Newman followed with a sacrifice fly to put MU ahead 10-5.
The Cougars will end the season when they host Eastern for a doubleheader, Saturday at noon.
