With five seniors playing in the final games of their careers, the Misericordia University baseball team ended the season with a split against Eastern.

Seniors Scott Huddle, Anthony Goncalves, Nate Newman, Jamie Philippi and Andrew Yasinski were honored between games, a 5-2 nine-inning loss in the opener, and an 8-7 win in the nightcap.

Newman and Goncalves both had two hits in the opener and Philippi worked eight-plus innings in his final career pitching appearance.

Eastern went ahead 1-0 in the top of the second and the Cougars responded with a run in their half of the inning. With one out, Bubba Jasinski, Huddle, Andres Gonzalez and Goncalves drew four consecutive walks to tie the score.

The Cougars went ahead 2-1 in the fifth when Goncalves led off with a double and was safe at third on Yasinski's fielder's choice before scoring on an infield error.

Eastern tied the score in the sixth and had a three-run rally on just one hit in the top of the ninth.

In game two, Kenny Durling had two hits and two RBI and Goncalves and Huddle added two hits.

After Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Cougars answered with five runs in the bottom half.

Durling and Philippi both had sacrifice flies in the inning and Jasinski and Chris Tuttle both drove in runs.

Eastern made it 5-4 with three runs in the third, but MU got two back in the fourth.

Yasinski and Goncalves connected for one-out singles and Tressa followed with an RBI-single. Durling came through with a two-out single to make it 7-4.

MU went ahead 8-4 in the fifth when Huddle singled with one out and came around to score on a single by Goncalves.

Eastern made it 8-7 in the sixth and put two runners on in the top of the seventh against winning pitcher Pat Clark.

With a 2-0 count, Ron Guido relieved Clark and got a three-pitch strikeout before giving way to Newman who induced a grounder to third base to end his career with a save.

The Cougars finished 21-15.
