The Misericordia University men's soccer team recorded 30 shots, including 18 on net, as the Cougars got their offense back on track with a 5-0 victory over Immaculata.
Sophomore
Andy Bush scored twice, giving him five total goals in the first four games of the season. Senior
Joey Scanlon had a goal and two assists while classmate
Jay-P Evans also had a pair of assists.
Matt Scott and
Alex Romeo each scored as well for the Cougars.
Up 1-0 at halftime, MU broke the game open with three goals in a seven-minute span early in the second half. Evans' 49th minute shot was blocked but Bush was there to slide the rebound home and less than a minute later Scanlon touched in his own deflection after winning the first ball on a free kick.
In the 56th minute, Scanlon and Evans combined to assist on Scott's first goal of the season and put the Cougars up 4-0.
Things only got worse for Immaculata when a Mighty Mac received a straight red card, putting the visitors down to 10 men for the remainder of the match.
With substitutes seeing extended time late in the game, freshman Romeo scored his first collegiate goal, tapping the ball home off classmate
TJ Schaefer's cross.
It was a welcome offensive outburst for a Cougars team that had stalled on the attack, enduring a stretch of over 184 minutes without a goal. Bush and Scanlon in particular had seen multiple good attempts go begging in a frustrating loss to Gettysburg this week and early on against Immaculata it was more of the same.
Nine minutes in, Bush was tripped up in the box, giving the Cougars a chance from the penalty spot. Unfortunately, Scanlon's shot was smothered by the Immaculata keeper.
Scanlon kept threatening, first getting behind the defense and forcing another save from the charging Mac keeper and then heading a corner kick off the post following yet another difficult save on Scott's 25-yard drive.
Three minutes later, Scott flipped the ball over his defender's head and shot to the far corner, resulting in a good diving stop by the Mighty Macs goalie. On the ensuing throw-in, Bush hit a bicycle kick over the bar.
MU finally broke Immaculata down in the 19th minute, when a long ball from
Greg Korhonen was flicked by Scanlon to Bush, who snuck his shot under the goalkeeper for a much-deserved Cougar lead.
Misericordia's
Dan Pinto and
Tim Bullis also had close calls late in the half, but MU was unable to add to its advantage until after the break.
The Cougars improve to 2-2 with the victory and will finish off a four-game home stand on Tuesday with a visit from Susquehanna.
