Overtime Goal Leads Ten-Man Cougars Past BBC

9/16/2010 7:44:32 PM

An overtime goal by Matt Scott in the 92nd minute broke a scoreless deadlock and led a shorthanded Misericordia University men's soccer team past an inspired Baptist Bible College side, Thursday in Clarks Summit, PA.

With 8:14 remaining in the first extra period, Scott took a pass from freshman Brandon Dressler and lofted a shot over the BBC goalkeeper, ending a frustrating afternoon for the Cougars.

Misericordia had won 13 straight games against Baptist Bible heading into today's contest, but the Defenders came out determined on their home field and challenged MU for every second of a tight, physical game.

The game turned when Baptist Bible goalkeeper Ian McGovern saved Bryan Kulbacki's penalty kick early in the second half, keeping the score tied at 0-0.

BBC had caught a break in the 31st minute when Misericordia forward Tim Bullis was sent off, leaving the Cougars to play a man down for the remainder of the game.

Despite competing with 10 players, MU kept pushing forward, with Bryce Houdeshel and Bo Garrick putting shots over and Dan Pinto and Chris Hummel seeing good chances blocked at the last second.

BBC had a chance of their own late in the first half, as MU goalkeeper Mason Astaneh got his fingertips on a low shot by Josh Jackson that was heading for the far post.

Despite his missed penalty, Kulbacki was huge for Cougars, controlling play all over the field and nearly scoring on two other occasions in the second half. His header off a corner kick was going in before being cleared off the line by a BBC defender, and his volley four minutes later went just wide.

Up a man and motivated after their keeper's big save, Baptist Bible pushed forward late and saw several good chances controlled by Astaneh. BBC nearly broke through with a minute remaining, as Caleb Byron slid a shot past Astaneh only for MU's Hummel to clear it off the goal-line.

Baptist Bible had done an incredible job for 90 minutes but there was still overtime to play and the teams were barely back on the field when Scott snuck behind the defense and delivered the knockout blow.

Astaneh made four saves and is now 4-1 in goal for the Cougars. Misericordia improves to 4-2 with the victory and will host Keystone on Monday.
