The Misericordia University men's soccer team trailed in the second half but scored three times in the final half-hour to rally past Scranton 3-1, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
In the 61st minute, sophomore
Andy Bush chased down a long drop kick from MU goalkeeper
Mason Astaneh, won the ball along the end line and slid it to
Dan Pinto. The junior midfielder smashed it home for his fifth goal in four games, tying the match at 1-1.
The Cougars would take the lead less than eight minutes later. Junior
Bryan Kulbacki powered in
Bryce Houdeshel's cross at the back post, leaving the Scranton keeper with no chance.
Misericordia wasn't done and the Cougars grabbed a third with five minutes to play. Scranton goalkeeper
Justin Frick made a fantastic save on Bush but freshman
T.J. Schaefer finished off the rebound for his first collegiate goal.
Scranton had drawn first blood in the 52nd minute when a defensive giveaway allowed
Michael Drew to find
Joseph Burbella on the left side of the box and the junior slipped the ball inside Astaneh's far post.
The beginning part of the game was fought mostly in the midfield. Misericordia's only half-chance early came when Bush single-handedly dribbled three Scranton defenders, only to be nudged off the ball at the last second.
Scranton just missed the target on several occasions in the first half, with
Bill McGuiness' free kick being blocked by
Greg Korhonen and Drew heading just wide of the far post.
The first shot on goal of the game didn't come until the 29th minute, when Pinto's rip forced a nice diving save from Frick. A minute earlier, Bush had gotten into the box and slid the ball past Frick but no one was there to finish off the play.
The Cougars kept pressing and Frick came up with another big save, stopping
David Stoner's 25-yard blast. On the ensuing corner kick, Pinto's attempt from six yards out was cleared off the goal line by a Royals defender.
Astaneh finished the game with three saves, including a great breakaway stop on
Derek Klingman when MU was holding onto a one-goal lead. Frick had six saves for the contest.
Misericordia has now won five straight and improves to 6-2 overall. The Cougars travel to face John Carroll on Saturday.
