Freshman
Alyssa Mocion had a part in two goals in a 97 second span as the Misericordia University women's soccer team prevailed 3-2 over York, Saturday at Mangelsdorf Field.
In the 63rd minute, Mocion collected the ball after a good win by senior
Jenica Keister and played a beautiful through ball to
Kim Suchoski, who blasted a shot into the right side of the net for a 2-1 Cougar lead.
A minute later, Mocion's curling shot was deflected by a defender right in front of goal and freshman
Emily Esposito finished off the play from a yard out.
The Spartans made it interesting with a late 25-yard goal, and could have scored again when they countered off an MU corner, but Cougar netminder
Morgan Myers (seven saves) made a diving save to her left to protect the one-goal advantage.
Misericordia had taken the lead late in the first half when captain
Jenn Brucker scored off a direct corner kick. York answered with a corner kick goal of their own, early in the second half.
Just before that goal, York had a great opportunity on yet another corner kick but sophomore
Nicolette Hensel cleared the shot off the line. The Spartans had momentum early in the second half, with Myers making a great breakaway save before MU re-took the initiative and grabbed two quick goals.
With York throwing numbers forward after Esposito's strike, Suchoski and
Laura Roney had breakaways saved as the Cougars looked to put the final nail in the coffin.
MU had to hold on early in the first half, with York nearly scoring 30 seconds into the contest. The ball was in the back of the net off an early free kick but the goal was called offsides.
The Cougars quickly got into the game and could have scored four and a half minutes in when
Katie Usher's long throw was flicked by Roney to Mocion. The midfielder hit a shot to the upper corner that forced a brilliant save from the Spartan keeper.
Two minutes later, Suchoski beat the offsides trap but her breakaway chance was forced just wide. Roney then had a nice chest-down and through ball to Suchoski but her shot was saved.
York had a dangerous free kick with 12 minutes to go in the half, central and just outside the box, but the attempt went high.
Three minutes later,
Nicolette Ruffler played a sneaky pass behind the wall off a free kick to Roney, only for the York goalkeeper to come up big again with a reaction save. But on the ensuing corner kick, Brucker shot directly off the keeper's hand and in for a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Cougars improve to 2-0 with the victory and travel to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday.
