Late Run Lifts Lyco Over Cougars

Christine Marks led all scorers with 25, but the Misericordia University women's basketball team fell to Lycoming 61-50, Tuesday night at the Anderson Center.

Hannah Seely had nine points, six rebounds and six steals and Tyann McDaniel added nine points for MU.

Lycoming scored 20 points in the last eight minutes to break a 41-41 tie and record their first win of the season.

Down 26-22 at halftime, the Cougars got two quick baskets by Marks and Seely to tie the game. 

Down by three with 15:08 left to play, McDaniel would hit a three off a Katie Drayton pass to tie the game at 31. 

Lycoming went on a 6-0 run that was answered by the Cougars with seven points of their own.

After a Marks' layup made it 37-33, Seely stole the ball and went the length of the court to score a basket and pull within two and she converted another steal into a three-point play to put MU ahead, 38-37 at 12:36.

Sutton converted a three-point play for Lycoming that ignited an 8-2 run and a 49-43 lead that Misericordia would not be able to overcome.

With the Cougars up by one early in the first half, Lycoming went on a 14-5 run to take a 20-10 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Marks hit a three to start a rally for the Cougars with 6:25 left in the half and Seely stole the ball and went the length of the floor to pull the Cougars within five, 20-15, with 4:30 to go.

Lycoming answered with a basket and sophomore Lauren Smicherko hit a three off a pass from Jesse Robinson to pull within four. 

Marks hit two free throws with under a minute left to pull within one, but the Warriors scored again at the end of the half to lead by four at the half.

MU is 1-3 and will open Freedom Conference play with rival Wilkes, November 30.
