Cougars Drop Slugfest at Alvernia

Ryan Cacchioli had three hits and four players had two hits each for the Misericordia University baseball team in a 14-10 loss at Alvernia.

Nate Newman had two hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs.

Andres Gonzalez had two hits and two RBI and Dylan Mazzo and Andrew Tressa both added two hits.

The Cougars used a four-run fourth inning to take an 8-5 lead, but Alvernia reagined control with a six-run fifth.

Alvernia took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Newman cut the deficit in half with a solo homer leading off the second.

The Cougars went ahead with three runs in the third.  Cacchioli led off with a single and moved to second on Mazzo's single down the left field line before Tressa singled to load the bases.  One out later, Newman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left and Gonzalez singled to plate two more runs.

Alvernia scored three in their half of the third before the Cougars went back in front with four in the top of the fourth.

Joe Tagliarini drew a leadoff walk and Cacchioli singled and both runners moved up on Mazzo's sacrifice bunt.  Tressa was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Kenny Durling drew a walk to force in the tying run.  Newman lofted another sacrifice fly before Gonzazlez singled to plate two more.

Trailing 12-8, MU added a run in the seventh when Will Minderjahn and Tagliarini walked before Mazzo singled to drive in a run.

Newman led off with a single, stole second and came around to score on an error

MU, 15-6, will open a three-game Freedom Conference series at Wilkes, Friday.
