The Misericordia University baseball remained in first place in the Freedom Conference with a doubleheader sweep at Eastern, 4-3, 4-1, Thursday.
Andrew Tressa,
Kenny Durling and
Nate Newman all had two hits in the opener as the Cougars rallied from a 3-1 deficit.
Ron Guido worked four innings to earn the win and
Mike Pena tossed three hitless of relief to pick up the save.
Tressa had two hits in the nightcap and
Joe Tagliarini drove in two runs to back the complete-game effort of
Pete Doggett who allowed just three hits while striking out eight.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth of game one, Tressa, Durling and Newman had consecutive singles to make it 3-2. After
Zach Myers walked to re-load the bases,
Jeff Slanovec Newman singled to tie the score, but the Eagles escaped further damage with three strikeouts to end the threat.
The winning run came in the top of the fifth when Durling singled with two outs and came around to score when Newman's double was misplayed in the outfield.
In the nightcap, MU went ahead 1-0 in the third
Nate Hamlin drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout before Tressa's RBI-single to center.
The Cougars made it 4-0 with a three-run fourth. With one out, Newman was hit by a pitch and Slanovec walked before both moved up on
Andres Gonzalez' sacrifice.
Mike Impellittiere singled in a run and stole second before Tagliarini singled to center to drive in a pair.
MU improved to 19-8 overall and 10-3 in the Freedom and will host Delaware Valley for a doubleheader, Monday at noon.
