Senior Nate Newman was unstoppable on the mound and at the plate against Delaware Valley, coming within a single of both a no-hitter and the cycle in the same game as MU swept the Aggies, 5-3 and 11-0.

Newman struck out five in a one-hit, complete game shutout in the nightcap, allowing only a first-inning single. At the plate, he was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and home run. He scored twice and had two RBIs as well.

MU blew the second game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Newman led off up a solo homer, his team-leading sixth of the season. Chris Tuttle's RBI single then brought Nate Hamlin and William Minderjahn home for a 5-0 Cougar advantage.

Tuttle had scored a run in the bottom of the third as he and freshman Ryan Cacchioli crossed the plate on errors to put Misericordia ahead 2-0.

The Cougars piled it on with a six-run sixth that featured RBI triples by Andrew Tressa and Newman and freshman Danny Price's first career home run.

MU had jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opener and held on for a 5-3 win. Starter Patrick Clark (5-1) was perfect through three innings and earned the decision. Closer Matthew Karabin threw 1.2 perfect innings to grab his sixth save- equaling the Misericordia single-season record.

Kenny Durling was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Andres Gonzalez was 2-for-2 at the plate. Hamlin was 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs.

Hamlin doubled in Cacchioli in the top of the first, and came around on Durling's single to make it 2-0. The Cougars doubled their lead in the third, with Joe Tagliarini's bounce single scoring Durling before the freshman also scored on a sacrifice fly.

DVC made it interesting with three runs in the top of the fifth. The Cougars escaped the inning with the lead after picking off a man at second for the third out.

MU grabbed an important insurance run in the sixth inning, when Hamlin knocked in freshman Frank Santarsiero to put the hosts up 5-3.

Misericordia improves to 21-8, 12-3 and holds a 1.5 game lead over DeSales atop the Freedom Conference standings. The Cougars travel to Delaware Valley tomorrow.
