FDU-Florham totaled 13 hits and 10 runs as the Misericordia University baseball team lost 10-7 to the Devils, Friday in Swoyersville.
Senior
Nate Newman was 2-for-3 and scored three times, while junior
Andres Gonzalez was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
The Devils scored three times in the top of the seventh to open up what was a 5-4 game at the time.
William Minderjahn had made a great play in the second inning, reaching back over the right-field fence to rob FDU of a home run.
The Cougars then went ahead in the bottom of the second. After Newman singled and stole second, Gonzalez ripped a two-out single to send him around.
FDU took the lead with three runs in the top of the third. Minderjahn came up with another nice defensive play, running down a ball at the foul line to end the frame. He then led off the bottom of the third with a walk but the Cougars couldn't score with
Andrew Tressa working an impressive 14-pitch at bat before grounding out to short.
FDU had runners in scoring position with just one down in the fourth, but MU starter
Mike Pena (3-1) got a key pop-up for the second out. Newman snagged a hard liner for the third, but one run did come in to put the visitors up by three.
Newman and Gonzalez both reached base again in the bottom of the fourth, and scored on Michael Impellittiere's double to the left field wall. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and MU down 5-3,
Kenny Durling caught a fly ball for the second out and then gunned the man down at home from deep center to keep the Cougars within two runs.
Misericordia crept to within a run in the bottom of the sixth, with Gonzalez singling in Newman again. The Cougars loaded the bases in the inning but couldn't get the tying run in.
MU is 21-9, 12-4 and travels to FDU for a doubleheader tomorrow.
