The Misericordia University baseball season came to an end with two losses in 15 hours at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, Saturday.
After falling to Alvernia, 3-1, in the winner's bracket final early Saturday morning, the Cougars dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Kean in the loser's bracket final, Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Cacchioli had two of MU's five hits against Kean and
Chris Tuttle added an RBI-double.
Losing pitcher
Ron Guido and
Mike Pena combined on a four-hitter for Misericordia, but Kean put together a five-run rally in the sixth inning to advance to the championship round against Alvernia.
Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth on the strength of their first hit of the game. Tuttle led off with a walk and moved to second on
Joe Tagliarini's sacrifice bunt before Cacchioli broke up the no-hitter with an RBI-single to left center.
Guido cruised through the first five innings allowing just one hit, but Kean took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch to tally five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kean used two walks and an infield single to load the bases before a third walk forced in the tying run. Back-to-back singles drove home three more runs and the fifth run came home on a wild pitch.
Pena came on in relief and got two strikeouts, including a strikeout-caught stealing double play to end the inning.
MU battled back with a pair of runs on Tuttle's two-run double in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3.
Nate Newman and
Jeff Slanovec both reached on infield singles before Tuttle's two-out, opposite-field shot down the left field line.
Cacchioli led off the eighth with his second hit of the game, but Kean turned a double play to end the inning and any hopes of a rally.
The Cougars finish 30-16.
After dropping its opening game, Kean has won four straight games to improve to 40-9 and must beat Alvernia twice to win the title.
