The Misericordia University softball team ended its 2011 regular season on a high note, sweeping Scranton 2-1 and 3-0, Tuesday at Anderson Field.

Kat LaBrie and Hollie Sarnak each had RBI hits as MU won a tight 2-1 decision in the opener.

After the Royals scored their only run of the day in the top of the first, Misericordia answered immediately. Sarnak's ground rule double to right-center scored Maria Kidron to even the score at 1-1.

MU was denied by good defense on several occasions. Nicole Wenner nearly had an RBI line drive in the third but the centerfielder leapt to snatch a ball that was flying over her head. Sarnak hit a hard liner that could have scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the second baseman made a nice grab.

The Cougars finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, as LaBrie's two-out single brought home Wenner for the winning run.

After the initial Scranton tally, MU starter Caitlin Cromley retired the next 15 consecutive batters until a Royal single in the sixth inning. Cromley (15-9) struck out seven and allowed just one run over seven innings to earn the decision.

Misericordia won the nightcap 3-0 behind a solid performance from freshman pitcher Emily Barnable (2-1), who allowed just four hits and no runs in six innings pitched. Classmate Jess Armillay threw the seventh to earn her first career save.

Nicole Boccia was 2-for-2 with an RBI in the second game, while Wenner was 2-for-3 and knocked in a run.

MU went up 2-0 in the first inning. On Sarnak's double, Kidron was almost gunned down at home with a great throw from center but she managed to put on the brakes and scramble back to third, scoring moments later on Wenner's single. Sarnak also stole home in the inning.

Scranton loaded the bases in the top of the third but the Cougars escaped the jam unscathed after a groundout to third base. Boccia then doubled in Emily Hullings in the bottom of the frame.

LaBrie saved a run in the bottom of the sixth, throwing out a runner at home to end the inning.

The Cougars end their season with a 22-16 record, and now await ECAC selection.
