The Misericordia University men's soccer team improved to 7-0 with a convincing 2-0 win over Elizabethtown in a battle of regionally ranked teams, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
Misericordia entered the game ranked sixth in the NSCAA/adidas Mid-Atlantic region while Elizabethtown, 5-2, was ninth.
Rob Wiacek and
Dan Pinto scored goals for the Cougars while
Greg Korhonen and
Andy Bush added assists.
Dan Fritz made five saves in net for the Cougars, who played the final 35 minutes a man down.
MU carried the play early in the first half and finally got on the board at 20:59 when Wiacek got on the end of a big throw from Korhonen and headed it between the E-Town keeper's legs.
The Blue Jays threatened in the closing minutes of the half with consecutive throw-ins deep in the Misericordia end, but the second was headed out of harm's way by
Bryan Kulbacki as the Cougars ran out the clock in the first half.
Eric Kishbaugh nearly put the Cougars up 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second half, but his shot rolled wide right.
A minute later, Bush gathered a ball at top of the box and found Pinto on a run and he played a ball across the goal mouth inside the left post for a 2-0 advantage at 47:15.
Wiacek almost made it 3-0 just two minutes later, but his shot was cleared off the goal line by an E-Town defender.
The Cougars had another solid scoring chance at 38:19 when Pinto ripped a shot from 18 yards out right at the Blue Jays keeper.
Elizabethtown became more dangerous with a man advantage over the final 35 minutes, but Fritz and the MU defense were up to the task.
Fritz made a diving stop on E-Town's most dangerous chance of the day at 87:30.
The Cougars will host Lebanon Valley, Wednesday at 7:00.
