Cougars Edged in Overtime by William Paterson

Freshman Lindsay Hischak scored a pair of goals, but Felicia Wetzel put in two of her own, including one just over a minute into overtime, as the Misericordia University field hockey team fell to William Paterson, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

Mariah Osgood added an assist on Hischak's first goal for the Cougars, who dropped their second overtime contest in their last three games.

MU controlled play for much of the first half, owning the advantage in both possession and shots. However, William Paterson made the most of its opportunities, as Shannon Fisher converted the Pioneers' only shot in the 38th minute to give her team a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars wasted no time in responding, as Hischak took the pass from Osgood to tie the score at 1-1, which it would remain at halftime.

The score remained locked at 1-1 until the 54th minute, when Wetzel put a ball past Cougar keeper Grace Riker to give the Pioneers the advantage once again.

Hischak once again responded, taking a beautiful lob entry from Terra Hall and then beating the Pioneer defense to score her fifth goal of the season and tie the score at 2-2.

The Cougars had a chance to take the lead in the 65th minute, but Pioneer defender Shannon Thomas came up with a goal-line save on a Hannah Harvey shot to preserve the tie.

William Paterson closed regulation on two straight corners, but the MU defense was able to clear the ball out of the circle to send the game into overtime, where Wetzel broke down the defense to score just 79 seconds into the period.

Riker stopped four shots in goal for the Cougars.

MU will look to get back on track on Monday, when they travel to FDU-Florham for a Freedom Conference contest set to start at 4:00 PM.
