MU Wins Key Battle With Eastern

Christine Marks had 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the Misericordia University women's basketball team won a key Freedom Conference game against Eastern, 68-56, Wednesday night in the Anderson Center.

Tyann McDaniel added 15 points and Jesse Robinson and Hannah Seely had 13 and 12, respectively.

Misericordia improved to 13-9 overall and 8-3 in the Freedom to break a second place tie with Eastern (16-6, 7-4).  DeSales is also 7-3 and will play at Manhattanville, Thursday.

Eastern pulled within a bucket, 33-31, to open the second half, but Marks responded with a short turnaround jumper and converted the three-point play for a 36-31 lead.

Marks added two more free throws and McDaniel drained a 15-footer to beat the shot clock to give the Cougars a 40-35 lead with 16:01 remaining.

Seely's putback made it 42-37 and she converted a steal into a short jumper for a 44-39 advantage with with 14:20 left.

Marks made a short jumper off an inbounds to put MU ahead, 51-46, with 8:40 remaining.

Following an Eastern basket, Lauren Smicherko's head-fake layup gave the Cougars a 53-48 lead and Marks made 1-of-2 technical foul shots for a 54-48 lead with 7:38 left.

McDaniel a three-pointer from the corner to go ahead 59750 and Seely took a nice feed from Katie Drayton for a 59-50 lead at 4:29.

Robinson's driving layup for her first points of the second half gave the Cougars a 61-53 advantage with 1:20 to go.

Marks got behind the defense on an inbounds for an easy layup to stretch the lead to 63-53 and Robinson made four free throws in the final 30 seconds.

After falling behind 9-2 in the opening minutes, the Cougars rallied to take a 33-29 halftime lead thanks to seven points from Robinson.

MU shot 43.3% from the floor over the first 20 minutes, including 5-of-12 from three-point range.

Coming out of a timeout, Drayton swished a three-pointer to snap a 7-0 Eastern run and Seely followed with a layup to get within 9-7 at 14:55.

Following an Eastern bucket, Robinson drilled a deep three-pointer to beat the shot clock and get within one, 11-10.

Seely's layup on a nice feed from Robinson gave the Cougars their first lead, 12-11, with 13:40 to go.

After Eastern went ahead 16-14, Robinson grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast to tie it, 16-16, with 12:23 to play.

McDaniel drained a three-pointer off a pass from Robinson just before the shot clock buzzer for a 19-16 lead.

The Eagles responded with an 8-0 spurt to take a 24-19 with 7:20 remaining.

Kayla Sileo with a short jumper and McDaniel and Lauren Smicherko made back-to-back treys to give MU a 27-24 lead with 5:20 left.

Misericordia will travel to Delaware Valley, Saturday.
