Cougars Sweep Griffins In Home Opener

The Misericordia University baseball team swept Gwynedd-Mercy, 14-13, in game one and, 9-5, in the nightcap, Saturday afternoon at Roosevelt Field.

In game one, Corey Lee got the win in relief for MU while Chris Tuttle went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs.  In game two Evan Robaczewski earned the win while Gabe Noyalis went 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

In game one, the Griffins scored three runs in the top of the second, but MU answered with a run on four hits to start the bottom of the inning.  Chris Tuttle singled to left center to drive in two runs and tie it at three a piece.  MU went on to score five more runs on three hits and four errors to make it 8-3 after two.

Gwynedd-Mercy threatened in the top of the third with runners on second and third with two outs, but first baseman Joe Tagliarini made a diving stop and stepped on the bag to end the threat.

In the bottom of the third, Nate Hamlin drove a ball to right center to drive in Jeff Slanovec and Ryan Cacchioli singled to center to drive in Tuttle and make it 11-3 after three innings of play. 

Tuttle smashed a homerun over the right field fence to extend the Cougars' lead to six, after six.

The Griffins answered with six runs in the top of the seventh to force extra-innings.  In the bottom of the eighth, Nate Hamlin laid down a bunt with one out to bring Joe Tagliarini to the plate and give MU a 14-13 win.

In game two, Gwynedd-Mercy got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first, but MU answered when Noyalis drove one down the left field line to score two and knot it at two.

After GM scored two in the top of the third inning, Noyalis and Hamlin both hit two-run doubles to put MU up, 6-4, with four innings to play.

Robaczewski pitched three shutout innings and Justin Shuleski pitched the bottom of the seventh to give MU a 9-5 victory.

MU improved to 13-2, and will face off against Scranton, Wednesday.
