Slanovec, Santarsiero Lift Cougars Over Susquehanna

3/7/2012 4:11:00 PM

Jeff Slanovec threw the potential game-tying run out at the plate to end the game and lift the Misericordia University baseball team to a thrilling 8-7 win over Susquehanna, Wednesday in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Frank Santarsiero and first baseman Joe Tagliarini combined to throw out the potential go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh.

Santarsiero added two hits and three RBI while Mike Impellittiere added three hits for the Cougars.

Ryan Cacchioli added two hits as MU won their sixth straight game to improve to 8-1.

Corey Lee earned the win with 1.2 innings of perfect relief and Gabe Noyalis pitched the ninth to pick up the save.

Cacchioli's RBI-single gave MU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and the Cougars added five runs in the top of the second.

Tagliarini walked and Chris Tuttle was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a double steal before coming home on Santarsiero's single.

Impellittiere followed with an RBI-single and the Cougars added a pair of unearned runs.

Tagliarini singled with one out in the fifth and stole second and eventually scored on Santarsiero's single.

Susquehanna plated a run in the fifth and added two more in the sixth before tying the score with four runs in the seventh inning that ended when Cougars threw out the Crusaders pinch-hitter as he tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park-homer.

Bubba Jasinski drew a one-out walk in the ninth and pinch-runner Bryce Frankenfield stole second.  After advancing to third on a groundout, Frankenfield scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Susquehanna threatened again in the bottom of the ninth when a single and a stolen base put the tying run on second, but Slanovec fielded a two-out single and threw the runner out at home to end the game.

Pete Doggett started on the mound and scattered seven hits over 5.2 innings.   Lee got the last two outs in the seventh and worked a perfect eighth to earn the win.

The Cougars will play Lebanon Valley, Thursday at 4:00.
