Castaldi Homers to Help Sweep DeSales on Senior Day

The Misericordia softball team swept conference opponent DeSales (5-4, 5-4), Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Megan Hardy had a walk-off double to win game one and Jill Castaldi hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Cougars the win in game two.

In game one, MU got on the board early in the first when Mallory Getts scored after a double, a stolen base and an error.  Kristi Seiler singled to plate Amanda Polaha and Hardy laid down an squeeze bunt to score Caitlin Cromley and take an early 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Castaldi reached on an error and Polaha grounded out to short to score her and make it 4-0 after two.

The Bulldogs got on the board with three runs in the third and added another in the fourth to tie it at four.

In the bottom of the seventh, Amber Woodling pinch ran for Polaha after a single to lead off the inning.  After Cromley bunted Woodling over, Hardy hit a walk-off double to left center.

In game two, Polaha singled in the first and Seiler drove her home with a single through the left side of the infield and give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Shawna Beil walked and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch.  Castaldi laid down a squeeze bunt to plate her and give MU a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.

DeSales scored three runs in the top of the third to take their only lead of the day, 3-2.


In the bottom of the third, Cromley was walked to lead off the inning and scored on three wild pitches.  Kat LaBrie advanced to third on the wild pitches and Jennifer Cory flied out to center field to score LaBrie and retake the lead, 4-3 after three.

DeSales tied it back up in the top of the fifth, but Castaldi hit a homer down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead back, 5-4.  Jess Armillay pitched a three-up-three-down top of the seventh to give MU the sweep.

Cromley earned the win in game one and improved to 12-6 and Armillay received the win in game two to improve to 6-5.

The Cougars improved to 20-12 (8-2) and will host Albright Wednesday at 3:00.
