Slanovec and Durling Propel MU Past WIlkes

The Misericordia University baseball team swept Wilkes, 13-7 and 8-0, Thursday afternoon at Wilkes.

MU's Corey lee earned the win in game one and Matt Karabin earned the win in game two while Kenny Durling combined for the cycle with six RBI and Jeff Slanovec went 3-5 with two home runs in game two for his second multi-home run game of the year.

In the top of the first Andrew Tressa reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.  Durling doubled to left field to plate Tressa.  Durling stole third and Slanovec doubled to left to score Durling and go up 2-0 after one.

Wilkes answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead into the fourth inning.

The Cougars responded in the top of the fourth when Slanovec tripled to right center to lead off the inning.  Mike Impellittiere singled to left to drive in Slanovec and then a pair of singles loaded the bases with no outs.  Joe Tagliarini grounded into a fielder's choice to plate Impellittiere and tie the game at four,  but Wilkes responded in the bottom of the inning to take a two-run lead after four.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fifth, Impellittiere doubled down the left field line to score Durling and Gabe Noyalis to tie it at six.  With Slanovec on third after the double, Chris Tuttle flied out to left to drive in Slanovec and go up 7-6 after five and a half innings of play.

With Tressa on third after a double and a Noyalis single, Durling hit a three-run homerun down the left field line to go up by four going into the final inning of play.

Tressa had an RBI single and Noyalis tripled to right center to score Tressa and Noyalis scored on a wild pitch to take the first game 13-7.

In the second inning of game two, Tuttle reached second on an error and Tagliarini singled to left to put runners on the corners.  Tuttle scored on a Cacchioli ground out and Tagliarini scored on a Wilkes error.  Jeff Slanovec hit a solo home run to left field to make it 3-0 after two innings.

Tressa led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the right field line.  Durling drove him home with a sacrifice fly and Slanovec hit his second home run to make it 5-0 after four. 

Kenny Durling led off the sixth with a solo home run to increase the lead to six.

In the seventh, Tagliarini was walked and Tressa tripled to center to drive him home.  Noyalis then hit a single to right field to drive in Tressa and cap off the scoring at eight.

The Cougars improved to 23-3 (10-1) and will face Stevens University on Monday.
