The Misericordia baseball team lost to #2 Cortland State, 7-2, in the NCAA Tournament, Thursday in Farmingdale, NY.
Jeff Slanovec went 3-4 with an RBI and
Matt Karabin went five innings striking out four batters and did not allow an earned run.
Cortland threatened in the top of the first inning with runners on first and second and one out. Karabin forced a ground ball to the shortstop to start a double play to get MU out of the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning,
Jeff Slanovec singled to left to start the inning. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out but could not advance any further.
The Red Dragons loaded the bases in the top of the third on two walks and a base hit. Karabin forced a fielder's choice and a fly ball to left to escape the inning unharmed.
Mike Impellittiere singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. He advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher, and Slanovec laid down a squeeze bunt to score Impellittiere and get on the scoreboard first.
Cortland responded scoring three runs on two MU errors in the top of the fifth and added four more in the top of the seventh to take a 7-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the seventh,
Bubba Jasinski reached base when he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a ground out.
Andrew Tressa singled to left-center to plate Jasinski and get one run back to make it 7-2.
Matt Karabin received the loss (7-2) and the Cougars end their season with a 36-10 record. Cortland will face the winner of Farmingdale State and Ithaca, Friday.
