After watching the women's team record a shutout in the early game, the Misericordia University men's soccer team posted a shutout in the nightcap of Saturday's soccer doubleheader against Delaware Valley at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Cougars 4-0 victory propels them to 8-3 overall while dropping the Aggies to 5-5-1 on the year. The win also puts the reigning conference champions at 1-0 in Freedom Conference play.
Misericordia got the scoring started early as junior Nick vonEgypt scored in the sixth minute off assists from Nick Ferguson and T.J. Schaefer.
Ferguson had multiple chances to add to the lead before halftime, but saw his shots go just wide or high of the net.
With a 1-0 lead in tact after 68 minutes, the Cougars broke the game open. Colin Snyder scored a beautiful goal with some help from Jonathan Grybos and Trey Ziegler and they added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Rob Wiacek scored off a corner kick from Kevin Matlon.
MU sealed the 4-0 victory in the 84th minute when Matlon scored, unassisted.
Equally as impressive was the Cougars defense, which limited Delaware Valley to just five total shots, none of which were on net for keeper Barry Fitzgerald.
The shutout was Fitzgerald's seventh of the young season.
The Cougars resume play on Oct. 12 against Freedom foe, Manhattanville.
