Minderjahn Pitches Cougars Past Susquehanna

3/4/2013 7:35:00 PM

Box Score Senior Will Minderjahn allowed just two hits and no runs in his first action on the mound in nearly two years as the Misericordia University baseball team pulled away for a 7-0 victory over Susquehanna on Monday afternoon at the Lawnwood Recreation Complex in Fort Pierce, FL.

Minderjahn (1-0) struck out six in seven and two-thirds innings of action on the mound to earn the victory and combined with Cory Vogeli and Max Weintraub for the Cougars' first shutout of the season.

Freshman Kyle Lindsay had a big day at the plate for MU, going 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI from the leadoff spot while Steve Sulcoski, Kenny Durling, Julian Faria and Connor Moriarty each went 2-4.

The game began as a pitcher's duel, as neither team managed a hit in the first three innings of play. The Crusaders' (0-5) Bryan Palsi posted a two-out single in the top of the fourth for the first hit of the game, but it was the Cougars (7-1) who would record the first run. After Mike Impellittiere and Sulcoski singled to start the MU fourth, Faria singled up the middle to bring Impellittiere home and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

After Minderjahn retired the side in the top of the fifth, MU scored twice more in the bottom of the inning on a Lindsay RBI-double down the left field line and a Sulcoski RBI-single to left field to extend the lead to 3-0.

Susquehanna's best opportunity came in the top of the eighth inning on a Mike Rucereto single up the middle with runners on first and second and just one out, but Durling made a perfect throw to Faria, who was able to tag Ty Raubenstine out at the plate to preserve the shutout.

For the second time in three games, the Cougars did much of their action in their final time at the plate, plating four runs in the bottom of the eight to extend their lead. Singles by Durling and Faria to open the frame placed runners on the corners, and after Faria stole second, Joe Tagliarini knocked a pinch-hit single through the left side to bring both runners home and extend the lead to 5-0.

After a Moriarty double placed runners on second and third again, Lindsay singled down the line to score Tagliarini and Moriarty was able to advance home on a throwing error.

Weintraub closed the game by throwing a pair of strikeouts in the top of the ninth.

Luc Kocher (0-2) took the loss on the mound for Susquehanna,  allowing 10 hits and four earned runs with 7.1 innings while striking out five.

The Cougars return to action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. when they face Penn State-Behrend.
