The Misericordia University softball team concluded its spring trip to the National Training Center in Clermont, FL, with a doubleheader split with Elizabethtown, Friday.
After dropping the opener, 6-5, in nine innings, the Cougars used four walks in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the winning run and win the nightcap, 5-4.
In the opener,
Amanda Polaha had two hits and
Shawnna Beil and
Sam Hare both scored twice.
Caitlin Cromley had two hits and two RBI in the nightcap and
Andi Veneziale added two hits.
Jess Armillay scattered 10 hits over seven innings to earn the win.
In game one, Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Hare reached on a one-out and eventually scored after Jenn Cory,
Mallory Getts and
Caitlin Cromley walked.
Trailing 2-1, the Cougars scored three times in the sixth.
Polaha led off with a single and pinch-runner
Diana Kestenbaum moved to second on a wild pitch. Hare walked and
Shawnna Beil was hit a pitch to load the bases before
Whitney Ellenberg was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Cromley singled to center to drive in two runs and put the Cougars up, 4-2, but E-Town tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Cougars took a 5-4 lead on Cromley's RBI-groundout in the top of the eighth, but the Blue Jays tied it the bottom of the frame and won it in the ninth.
In the nightcap, Ellenberg led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line and scored on Cromley's single to right center.
E-Town went ahead, 2-1, in the fourth, but the Cougars used a three-run rally in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
Schyler Yatsko reached on a one-out infield single and
Melissa Parker delivered a two-out single to center to move pinch-runner
Megan Gowe to third base.
Jenn Cory drove in a run with a single to center field and Veneziale followed with an RBI-single through the left side.
Cromley capped the scoring with a single through the right side.
Elizabethtown scored twice in the top of the seventh and had the go-ahead run thrown out at the plate to end the inning, setting the stage for MU's game-winning rally.
Kat LaBrie led off with a pinch-hit walk. After a pitching change,
Megan Hardy and Schyler drew free passes to load the bases.
Polaha followed with a walk to force in pinch-runner
Cailey Ware with the winning run.
Misericordia, 3-7, will open Freedom Conference play at DeSales, Saturday, March 16.
