Cougars Outlast Elements to Knock Off #13/17 Keystone

4/10/2013 9:18:00 PM

Box Score The Misericordia University baseball team endured adverse weather conditions to make a late inning push and knock off the #13/17 Keystone Giants 5-0 on Wednesday evening.

Max Weintraub, Anthony LoBello and Evan Robaczewski combined to allow just four hits and register the Cougars' third shutout of the season.

Andrew Tressa recorded the Cougars first hit of the game on a one-out single to left in the top of the first, but it would be the Cougars' only offense through the first three innings.

Keystone posted a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the second and then loaded the bases on a walk, but Weintraub recorded a timely strikeout to get out of the jam.

Steve Sulcoski singled in the fourth and Joe Tagliarini added one in the fifth but MU couldn't string anything together as the game remained scoreless into the bottom of the seventh.

Back-to-back walks to open the seventh inning gave Keystone its best threat of the game. However, at that time mother nature ran its course, and the two teams were sidelined more than an hour due to rain and lightning.

Robaczewski replaced LoBello following the weather delay and promptly recorded three quick outs- including a pair of strikeouts- to preserve the combined shutout.

Dylan Mazzo entered in a pinch-hit situation in the top of the eighth for MU and hit a one-out single to right field. Paul Shepherd followed with a single of his own, and a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. That set up Ryan Cacchioli for a RBI-single to right field, scoring Mazzo for what would stand as the game-winning run.

Tressa was hit by a pitch for the 12th time this season, tying the MU single-season record, to load the bases for Sulcoski. He responded with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, allowing Shepherd to score and extending the Cougar lead to 2-0.

Cacchioli pushed the lead to 3-0 by stealing home while Tressa was caught in a rundown between first and second.

After allowing a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth, Robaczewski struck out three straight batters to keep the shutout going into the ninth.

Kyle Lindsay walked to open the inning, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a runner in scoring position. Chris Boroch drew a one-out walk to give MU runners on the corners, and Lindsay scored when Keystone committed an error trying to throw out Boroch at second.

Mike Impellittiere reached on an error and then advanced to second, allowing Boroch to score on the play and close the scoring for MU at 5-0 before Robaczewski and the Cougar defense recorded three quick outs to end the game.

Weintraub (above) earned a no-decision despite posting his best outing of the year, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out two in five innings of action. LoBello threw one full inning and walked a pair of batters in the top of the seventh before Robaczewski took control, as the senior allowed just one hit and struck out five in three innings of action to earn the win.

The Cougars return to action tomorrow when they travel to Delaware Valley for a Freedom Conference game at 3:30.
