Late Run Edges Cortland Past MU Baseball

4/14/2013 6:14:00 PM

SUNY-Cortland scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning as the Misericordia University men's baseball team dropped a tight one to the #7/10 Red Dragons, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field in Moosic.

Ryan Cacchioli went 2-3 to lead the Cougar offense while Paul Shepherd went 1-2 with the Cougars' lone RBI.

Cortland had the first threat of the game when Chris Jackson hit a two-out triple in the top of the first, but Evan Robaczewski got Max Rosing to strike out swinging to end the inning.

The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the second when a Cacchioli single put runners on first and second with just one out, but the Red Dragons recorded a strikeout and groundout to keep the game scoreless.

After John Adornetto hit a leadoff single to center and stole second, Rosing hit a one-out RBI-single in the top of the third to score Adornetto and give Cortland a 1-0 lead.

Though the Cougar offense was struggling, Robaczewski kept MU alive with a strong performance on the mound, allowing no hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while striking out the side in the sixth.

Mike Impellittiere drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth and a Joe Tagliarini bunt single would give the Cougars a pair of baserunners with no outs. A Cacchioli sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position, and Shepherd laid down a bunt for the squeeze play to score Frankenfield and tie the game at 1-1.

A leadoff single gave the Cougars promise in the bottom of the seventh, but the Red Dragon defense would turn a double play to eliminate the threat.

Neither team managed a hit in the eighth inning, sending the game into the final frame still tied. Brandon Barber got two quick outs on a popup and a flyout, but then walked Tim Panetta and hit Bryan Mistretta with a pitch. Cory Vogeli came in to pitch for the Cougars, but Adornetto hit a single to shallow left field that gave Panetta just enough time to come home and score what would hold as the game-winning run.

After a leadoff groundout in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Lindsay was hit by a pitch to reach first. Boroch reached on a fielder's choice with Lindsay out at second, and an Andrew Tressa two-out single gave the Cougars the tying run in scoring position. Cortland's Cody Petre remained unfazed, striking out Steve Sulcoski to end the game and preserve the win.

Barber took the loss on the mound, allowing one run in one and one-third innings of play. Robaczewski scattered four hits and one run over six innings of action while striking out nine batters in the start. Anthony LoBello walked a pair of batters in a scoreless one and one-third innings of action on the mound while Vogeli allowed the one hit during the final one third inning of the game.

Steven Kimmelman earned the win for SUNY-Cortland, allowing just one hit and striking out four in two and two-thirds innings, while Petre earned the save for his efforts in the ninth. Brandon Serio started for the Red Dragons, allowing three hits and no runs with five strikeouts and two walks in five innings on the mound, while Zachary Badanes gave up the Cougars' lone run in one-third inning.

Additionally, the win gave Cortland Coach Joe Brown his 500th career victory.

The Cougars return to the field tomorrow when they travel to Delaware Valley to finish the season series with the Aggies at 3:30 PM.
