MU Offense Too Much for Moravian

4/18/2013 8:12:00 PM

Steve Sulcoski and Paul Shepherd each went 3-4 while Sulcoski added 4 RBI as the Misericordia University baseball team earned a 9-4 non-conference victory over Moravian on Thursday afternoon at Tambur Field.

Matt Karabin had a strong showing on the mound, scattering eight hits and two runs over seven innings while striking out three. In addition, Karabin became MU's all-time leader in pitching appearances with 49 over the course of his four years with the Cougars.

MU (24-8) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Chris Boroch earned a one-out walk and advanced to third on a Shepherd single. Shepherd would steal second and the Greyhounds' attempt to throw him out sailed over the second baseman's head, allowing Boroch to head home for the opening run.

A Kyle Lindsay leadoff single gave the Cougars early life in the bottom of the third, and an Andrew Tressa walk gave MU a pair of baserunners. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance, setting up Sulcoski for a deep fly to left field that scored Lindsay. Tressa would extend the MU lead to 3-0 when Kenny Durling reached on a throwing error just one batter later.

Moravian (17-14) scored a pair in the top of the sixth to cut MU's lead to just one run, but the Cougars answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own. Ryan Cacchioli led the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Joe Tagliarini groundout. A Boroch single through the left side would send Cacchioli home and Boroch was able to advance to second on the throw home.

A Shepherd single moved Boroch to third, and Shepherd then stole second. A John Repetto walk loaded the bases for Lindsay, who singled through the left side to score Boroch. Sulcoski would send two more runners home on a single up the middle to extend MU's lead to 7-2 through six innings.

Cacchioli led off the seventh with a single and later came home to score on a Shepherd single to deep right center to make it an 8-2 game.

The Greyhounds scored a pair of runs off Max Weintraub in the top of the eighth, but the Cougars got one back in the bottom of the inning when Tressa doubled to the left center wall and then scored on a Sulcoski single down the left field line to close the scoring at 9-4.

After allowing a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, Weintraub got a pair of hard lineouts to left field, and Shane McGraw came in to record the final out and give MU the victory.

Jimmy McCarthy went 3-5 with two doubles to lead the Greyhounds.

The Cougars are slated to return to action tomorrow, hosting Eastern at 3:30 PM.
