MU Drops Two Extra-Inning Heartbreakers at DeSales

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Misericordia University baseball team struck first in both games of a doubleheader at DeSales, Saturday afternoon. However, the Bulldogs struck last in both games winning them each in extra innings.
 
The Cougars fell 7-6 (8 inn.) in game one and 9-8 (9 inn.) in game two.
 
MU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Chris Boroch scored from third on a ground ball to second off the bat of Michael Comerford and Jeremy DeCotiis scored on a Max German sacrifice fly.
 
The Cougars tacked on three more runs in the top half of the second, extending their lead to 5-0. Nick Hair scored on a ground ball to second by DeCotiis while Ryan Cacchioli and Boroch scored on a DeSales throwing error later in the inning.
 
The Bulldogs began chipping away at the five-run deficit in the home half of the second. Carrington Santana roped an RBI single to left field and Nick Fischer drew a bases loaded walk bringing the Bulldogs to within 5-2.
 
The Bulldogs added two more in the second when Charles Dennis scored on a wild pitch and Fischer followed with an RBI single cutting the MU lead to just 5-4 after six.
 
Fischer continued his big day at the plate with an RBI double in the sixth and Mark Fuse followed with an RBI single, giving DeSales its first lead of the game at 6-5.
 
The Cougars fought back, tying the game at 6-6 on a German RBI single. However, Fuse answered with an RBI single of his own for DeSales, giving the Bulldogs the 7-6 win in eight innings.
 
Tyler Reyes picked up the win for the Bulldogs with a scoreless top half of the eighth, while Corey Lee suffered the loss in relief for the Cougars. Brett Davis tossed a scoreless fifth for MU.
 
The Cougars again jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader, this time on a Miles Westrich RBI single.
 
DeSales responded with a six-run seventh on RBI doubles off the bats of Michael Hronich, Chris Rubin and Dennis.
 
The Cougars bounced back with a three-run fourth, bringing the DeSales lead to just 6-4. Julian Faria scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Lindsay, Boroch scored on a wild pitch and Westrich capped the rally with a single and a throwing error allowed Comerford to score.
 
The Bulldogs added two more in the home half when Hronick doubled down the left field line. Mark Westdyk and Santana scored on the double, but Comerford and Westrich combined for a 9-3-2 putout at the plate and keeping the DeSales lead at 8-4 after four.
 
MU came all the way back tying the game at 8-8 in the top half of the sixth inning. Westrich was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Borcoch to score and German roped an RBI single to left. Westrich capped the three-run sixth inning when he scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kyle Seawards.
 
However, just like in game one, Fuse countered with an extra-inning walk-off single in the home half of the ninth and gave DeSales a 9-8 victory in the second of the twin bill.
 
Cory Vogeli suffered the loss for the Cougars while Eric Elmer picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Jim Tunison, Garrett Pelko, Shane McGraw and Mike Bernet each tossed scoreless innings in relief for the Cougars.
 
The Cougars travel to Moravian on Tuesday with first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m.
